Oh the E.R.

Today started off as a good day.

I woke up to the sound of the boys playing quietly in their room, waiting for me to come get them….a new routine in the house that they implemented & I absolutely LOVE.

I went to their room & they were happy to begin their day! We came downstairs, got our milk & cereal and watched some good ol’ cartoons together.

After breakfast, the boys were in their toy room having a good time & I chatted with an old high school friend for a bit.

I went into the toy room around 10-ish & started playing trains with Cohen. Lucas ran off to the kitchen & came back a few moments later with a carseat attachable toy & 1 button battery while swallowing something.

I immediately went into panic mode.

“Lucas, where are the other batteries?!” – me
Lucas opens his mouth.
“Did you eat one of these?!” – me
“Yah Yah Yah Yah” – Lucas

“oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh – no no no no!!!!” – me
I run into the kitchen to try and find the other batteries.
I find 1. I move things around on the counter top & don’t see any more.

I immediately start looking for numbers to call – ER’s in the area & our nurse advice line.
I call Jesse as I’m looking to give him a heads up that he may have to come home so we can take him in.
After a while I am on the line with our nurse advice line and she tells me that I should bring him in to be on the safe side.
Jesse comes up & we pack everyone up.

In the meantime, Lucas is acting perfectly normal.

I on the other hand am freaking out. How did I let this happen?! I knew I should have put those somewhere he couldn’t get them! I know better to leave them out since he can get on the counters now! What if something happens to him – it will all be my fault?!

I don’t say anything on the drive there, because I am afraid if I start to talk I may start to cry – and no one needs a very pregnant Momma crying when trying to get her son seen.

We arrive, get everything sorted out at the A&E (that’s their ER) and wait. A nurse comes out a few moments later & Lucas and I are on our way back. The doctor comes in, checks his mouth and sends us off to get an x-ray of his tummy.

Off to x-ray we go. Jesse ended up having to go in with him as I’m very pregnant & Lucas put up a nice big fight for them. The lady doing the xray had to go get another staff member bc Lucas was THAT strong. Yikes. After the xray, we were sent back to the A&E waiting area to get the results.

The doctor came out & said she couldn’t see any battery on the xrays & wanted him to drink a glass of water to make sure it wasn’t lodged up higher than the mid-throat. He drank the whole thing down – no problem. She told us to go ahead & go home and if we see anything that concerns us to come back immediately.

We come home, Lucas goes down for his nap & the rest of us go grab some lunch. I ran to the bathroom real quick beforehand and when I walked back into the kitchen, Jesse is standing there with a VERY serious look on his face….

“What’s that look for?!” – me
Moves the back piece of the toy to reveal the 3rd battery.
“OH MY GOSH! I am SOOOOO sorry!” – me

Yup. I had moved all the things on the counter around – but didn’t actually LIFT up the back piece of the toy where the last little battery was hidden.

Lord have mercy.

So, if you ever think your child has eaten something – be sure to thoroughly check things BEFORE heading to the ER & causing a panic.

On a positive note – praise GOD my little Lukey is safe & out of harms way.
